How to Care for Silk Products

How to Care for Silk Products

At Bold & Bravewe specialize in silk, the luxury fabric that’s known for its luminescent shimmer and soft tactile property. Because silk is so elegant and valuable, we know how important it is for our customers to maintain and care for their silk. The experts at Bold & Brave have devised this simple list to help you take care of your silk products so that they stay in perfect condition.

When Machine Washing

There is a common myth that silk can’t be watched in a washing machine. While this isn’t true, it’s imperative that when washing silk in a machine you follow the instructions on the label. At Bold & Brave, we recommend washing our products in a delicate wash bag at 86°F (30°C) and that you use a pH neutral liquid detergent that does not contain enzymes and never use bleach!

Another tip: Don’t tumble dry your silk! It’s best to hang dry silk in a spot out of direct sunlight.

When Hand Washing

Handwashing is the safest and most gentle way to maintain silk at home. At Bold & Brave, we recommend hand washing at a temperature of 86°F (30°C) . Fill the sink with warm water and enzyme-free detergent. Take the pillowcase, sleep mask, or scrunchie in your hands and gently cleanse it with the water. When done, drain the sink and hang the silk to dry. Avoid direct sunlight and never tumble dry your silk products!

Another tip: Dry cleaning is always a safe option!

Keeping Silk Smooth

Silk can be ironed at low heat at 230 °F (110 °C). Although some companies say you can tumble dry your silk, at Bold & Brave, we strongly recommend that you hang dry instead. Tumble drying can damage silk fibers, and we want your elegant products to remain like new. Hand held steamers can be used on silk, just make sure you steam from a safe distance (at least a few inches from the material).

Storing Silk

Silk can be stored with your clothes or on any surface but should be kept out of direct sunlight so its color doesn’t lose its vibrancy. If you’re storing silk long-term, a cotton garment bag works best. This will keep bugs from going near it. High quality mulberry silk, like the kind we use at Bold & Brave will last many years if cared for properly.
