These two fabrics are often mistaken for each other, and it’s no surprise why. At first glance, they’re both soft, shiny, and slippery. But when it comes to health benefits and longevity, silk and satin couldn’t be more different. For those of you new to this topic, let’s go over these two fabrics.
What is Satin?
Rather than a type of fabric, satin actually describes the type of weave used. Traditionally, satin was made from silk, but modern-day companies tend to use blends of synthetic fibers. The type of fabric used will reflect the quality and price of the product.
Common fabrics used to make satin include:
- Low-grade silk
- Cotton
- Nylon
- Polyester
- Rayon
- Acetate
- Viscose
Satin is generally inexpensive and easier to take care of, making its shimmery effect popular for clothing, costumes, and even interior design. Overall, satin has become the cheaper alternative to silk, often confusing first-time users looking for the real deal.
What is Silk?
Silk, on the other hand, is of higher quality and is usually made by silkworms. It also has a long, storied history behind it—silk was first developed in ancient China, around 8,500 years ago in 1100 B.C. The fabric is usually measured in mommes, which is a Japanese measure of silk’s weight. The higher the momme, the higher the quality.
Mulberry silk is typically considered the highest quality silk, measuring at 22 mommes. That’s why we use this type of silk exclusively at Bold & Brave!
What’s the Big Difference?
With satin, you’re never quite sure what you’re getting. And because synthetic fabrics are often utilized, it’s hard to know the environmental effects or overall durability. Silk, on the other hand, is a more environmentally-conscious process. While silk is generally more expensive than satin, it’s more durable and far softer on skin and hair.
So, next time you’re looking at something made from “satin,” remember these key differences with silk when making the decision to purchase.
